Non-Traditional Careers in the Sciences

Two Sessions:

Tuesday, April 12, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm: Post-Doctoral Fellows/Senior Doctoral Candidates

Wednesday, April 13, 9:00am – Noon: Early Doctoral and Master’s Students

Facilitator:  Dr. Lisa Balbes

Graduate Student Centre, Crescent Road, Point Grey Campus

Free Admission

We are pleased to welcome back Dr. Lisa Balbes, whose sessions last year were very successful and well-received.  These interactive seminars are designed to assist post-doctoral fellows and graduate students in the sciences to understand their future career options. The agenda includes:

  • Academia, Industry, Government and the differences among them as employers
  • Non-traditional careers: What are they? What skills are needed?
  • What do you have to offer an employer?
  • What is important to you and why does that matter in a career search?
  • Your personal data format and sample résumés and CVs for scientists

Note: Each attendee is asked to bring a résumé (draft will do) because the final part of the session will include a peer review of each other’s résumés for feedback.

Dr. Lisa M. Balbes is the author of Nontraditional Careers for Chemists, published by Oxford University Press in 2006. She earned her Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her undergraduate degrees in chemistry and psychology from Washington University in St Louis. She founded Balbes Consultants in 1992 to provide scientific writing services and custom workshops to more than 50 client companies, including Bausch and Lomb Surgical, Divergence, Sigma Aldrich, Stereotaxis, and the FDA. Dr. Balbes is currently a councilor for the St Louis local section of the American Chemical Society, and chair of their Committee on Economic and Professional Affairs.
