POSITION: Coordinator, SMaRT Program
The Scientific Methods and Research Training (SMaRT) Program engages Grade 5-7 students in East Vancouver Schools in exciting hands-on science activities. Groups (or “pods”) of UBC volunteers visit classrooms over a period of 4 weeks and deliver fun, science-based activities to enhance student learning and appreciation of the sciences. As program coordinator, you will coordinate teachers and student volunteer’s successful participation in the program. This program is run in partnership by UBC’s Trek Program and Let’s Talk Science (LTS).
Honorarium: $4000
Hours: Approx. 250 hrs from Aug 2011 to May 2012 (Dec- March approximately 10-15 hrs/week, Apr-Nov 4 hrs/week)
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist with the planning and implementation of the SMaRT Program at designated partner school including:
– Create volunteer pods and coordinate classroom visits
– Plan and co-facilitate orientation and training sessions for UBC students
– Assemble and distribute science supplies to schools
– Assist with evaluation and program wrap up
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
– Must be a UBC graduate student in good academic standing who will be continuing studies in the 2011/12 academic year.
– Must have a background in science
– Professional oral and written communication skills
– Excellent organizational and time-management skills. Ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines
– Enthusiastic and able to motivate and inspire others
– Able to work as a team member using strong interpersonal skills.
– Previous involvement in UBC’s Trek Program and/or Let’s Talk Science would be an asset
– Previous experience in a leadership position an asset
